South Caucasus Railway

The South Caucasus Railway (SCR) is the sole railway operator in Armenia, responsible for all inter-city, commuter, and freight rail transport across a 780-kilometer network. Established after a 2008 agreement transferring Armenian Railways to Russian Railways, SCR operates under a 30-year concession. The railway uses the Russian gauge, consistent with neighboring countries.

Train Types: SCR uses two main types of trains for passenger services:

1. ER2 Trains: These Soviet-era trains consist of 3-4 cars and are commonly used on various routes, including Yerevan to Araks and Gyumri. They are known for their reliability but are older models.
2. EP2D Trains: Modern and more comfortable, these 2-car trains serve routes like Yerevan to Yeraskh and Gyumri. They offer a more up-to-date experience with enhanced amenities for passengers.

International Connections: While Armenia's rail links with Azerbaijan, Turkey, and Iran have been closed since 1993, the route to Georgia remains open, offering a scenic cross-border journey. The journey to Tbilisi typically takes around 10 hours, with stops at key cities like Gyumri and Vanadzor, while the trip to Batumi extends to approximately 15 hours, offering a picturesque route along the Black Sea coast.
